Catholics believe that through this, they will be safe from evil spirits, accidents and other adversities. As something that is being paid for by our Catholic fellowmen, these celebrations of blessing and payment for the services of the officiating priest.
According to Catholic Priests, the doctrine of blessing originated when God blessed all the animals in the field he had created. This is also, they say, one thing that the Lord Jesus Christ and his apostles have done, which, up to now, is practiced by the Catholics.
The Catholic Encyclopedia states:
“The custom of giving blessings goes back to the very earliest time. In the morning of creation, on the completion of each day’s work, God blessed the living creatures that come from his hand, bidding them to increase and multiply and fill the earth.”
Giving blessings is usually done by sprinkling “holy water,” lighting of candle, and offering prayers. Not just because of the belief that this will keep them away from accidents but the relief that this will keep away evil spirits who live in the place and wandering souls that stayed in tragic places.
